Tottenham full-back Djed Spence has said that he hopes to have a ‘long journey’ with Genoa after joining the Italian club on loan from Tottenham.
Spence spent the first half of the season on loan in the Championship with Leeds United, but that was cut short when the January transfer window opened. The 23-year-old returned to Tottenham but was soon on the move again, completing a loan move to Genoa as part of the deal that saw Radu Dragusin join Spurs in January.
It is said that the deal includes an option to buy at the end of the season, with Spence not being part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans at Tottenham. Genoa had shown an interest in a move six months earlier but were outpriced by Leeds at that time.
Spence has now spoken for the first time about his move to Italy and has hinted that he sees his long-term future with the Italian club.
“I knew they had already been looking for me last summer. Now, the right conditions were evidently there to close the operation. I’m satisfied. It’s an important opportunity,” he told Gazzetta dello Sport (via SportWitness). “I hope that this can be the beginning of a long journey in a club that is growing.
“I found a nice team and a pleasant city. I settled in quickly. They supported me in everything. Everyone in the locker room has helped. There’s a nice atmosphere here. Soon I will start studying Italian. For now, I prefer to concentrate on football.”
