German side eliminated PSV Eindhoven thanks to goals from Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus
Borussia Dortmund's last chance of silverware this season comes in the form of the Champions League, albeit it will be difficult for the German side to do that, despite squeezing past PSV Eindhoven 2-0 on the night, 3-1 on aggregate.
Jadon Sancho has continued his slight resurgence in form with the Bundesliga side. After his individual goal against Werder Bremen at the weekend, the on-loan Manchester United winger fired the hosts into the lead after just three minutes.
Some fine hold-up play from Julian Brandt saw Sancho receive the ball just outside the penalty area, and a clever body feint later the English international was powering a show low into the near post.
Whether it caught Walter Benitez unsighted in the PSV goal remains to be seen, but the stopper couldn't dive far enough to prevent Sancho's shot from finding the back of the net.
It was then a first-half of missed chances for a motivated Dortmund side. Julian Brand was the first to fire a shot towards Benitez's goal, yet he was equal to it and he parried it wide.
Donyell Malen was next, getting on the end of a rebound inside the penalty area, however Benitez showed an incredible amount of desire to rush out, block the angle for the shot and make another key save.
If the Eindhoven side reaching this stage of the competition is an admirable achievement, it was perhaps the limit of their current squad.
PSV simply didn't have the quality to truly test a Dortmund team that has proven themselves to be, brittle, at times during the domestic season.
The visitors simply couldn't build up much momentum and were constantly at risk of the counter attack.
