The January transfer window is rarely about quantity but quality. It is a month in which high quality decisions can change seasons — the fact that it rarely happens for those that do delve into business tells its own story — and poor ones can have a negatively defining impact.
For Chelsea they have pretty much only got things wrong at this stage of the season in the past. Of their eight signings from January 2023 only Enzo Fernandez has been a true difference maker and even then there's debate over his true effect. Benoit Badiashile has been strong at points whilst Malo Gusto looks value for money. The others, not so much; not yet at least.
But just as much as it is often incomings that are focused on there is also a chance to repair and solve problems in January. Not only do Chelsea have deals they would like to make to strengthen the side now, other calls recruitment and planning calls made could lead to progression further down the line.
Let it not be forgotten that a well-advised loan can be just as fruitful six or 12 months in the future as a new signing. It is this that makes Chelsea's plans so interesting.
The Blues have largely wasted their seven international loan spots up for the season to date — though that could change it would take some complex and perhaps unlikely logistical tweaks — but have been more successful with their domestic endeavours.
