Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner opens up on life-threatening injury that ended his playing career

Oliver Glasner has revealed how his own health scare has given him a deep understanding of the situation faced by Roy Hodgson. The former Crystal Palace manager was taken to hospital after falling ill during a training session last Thursday.

Four days later, it was announced that he would be stepping down and the ex-Eintracht Frankfurt boss would take over. The 76-year-old was out of contract at Selhurst Park at the end of the season but was forced to step away following his illness.

In a statement, Hodgson said: «Given recent circumstances, it may be prudent at this time for the club to plan ahead.»

Glasner was reminded of a health scare of his own in 2011, just before his 37th birthday, when he had emergency surgery for a subdural haematoma. Doctors told him he had a «50/50» chance of surviving and speaking during his press conference, the Austrian said: «When somebody tells you that (50/50) afterwards, of course you think, and this is why I spoke about Roy, for example.

»This really comes from the bottom of my heart because sometimes we forget that health is our biggest value, because when you are healthy, you don't think about it." He also admitted that even he sometimes forgets this important lesson, especially when caught up in the world of football.

«It's very important, but it's just football. Maybe the best thing in the world, but not the most important thing because this is health.»
