Jamie Carragher and Joel Ward pay tribute to 'integral' Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace captain Joel Ward has hailed Roy Hodgson as «an integral part of the club's history» after he decided to leave his job on Monday.
The 76-year-old, who fell ill at the training ground last week, has been replaced by Oliver Glasner. The Austrian helped Eintracht Frankfurt win the Europa League in 2022. and watched his new side play out a 1-1 draw with Everton on Monday night.
Hodgson has been the manager of Crystal Palace twice, and Ward has featured prominently in both spells. Before Monday's game at Goodison Park, Ward said: «Our thoughts go out to the gaffer. He's been someone who has been integral to this club for a number of years, so we want to make sure we give him a good send-off and wish him all the best.»
He added: «He (Hodgson) has been an integral part of this club's history and in the Premier League as well, with the time he's spent and the players he's worked with. We are very fond of him, and he's given us so much over the years, so we want to wish him all the best and good health.»
Jamie Carragher, who played for Hodgson at Liverpool, said: «Roy is unique in a number of ways. Another thing that makes him unique is not only managing at 76 years of age in the Premier League, which is phenomenal he's coaching at that age.
»I know from my own experience at Liverpool and last season when he came in with that miraculous job to keep Crystal Palace in the Premier League, he's still on that training pitch day in and day out."
