Warren Feeney says Glentoran fended off January interest in David Fisher
Glentoran boss Warren Feeney admits the one chink of satisfaction in an otherwise gloomy fortnight was the piece of business he conducted to secure the services of striker David Fisher on a longer contract.
The 22-year-old, who has bagged seven goals in his last six games, is now producing the form that convinced Feeney to snare him from AFC Wimbledon in the summer.
Feeney’s boys may be unbeaten in their last four games, but they tossed away vital points in their last two home outings against Cliftonville and Carrick Rangers after establishing a two-goal lead in both.
Having taken his goal tally to 11 with an exquisite strike against Stuart King’s gutsy Carrick last week, Feeney acted quickly to open negotiations with Fisher.
“He took a little bit of time to settle when he arrived,” said the former Northern Ireland international striker. “When I signed him, I’d known him from my time in England.
“It wasn’t a case of taking a gamble on him, I knew he was a good player. In saying that, he needed to get fit when he arrived.
“You can now see what he’s about, he’s leading the line well. A couple of clubs came in for him on deadline day, but he wanted to stay, he’s enjoying it here.
“That’s the type of players we want; he’s still young; he’s scoring goals and he’s got a smile on his face, which is a big plus for us.”
Feeney’s immediate priority now is improving his team’s game management following their dramatic collapse against the Reds and Carrick.
“That’s why this club hasn’t been challenging for things, the entire mentality needs to change, moving forward,” he added. “If it doesn’t happen, then there needs to be changes.
