A man overcame a ‘scary’ moment to find a new career after over two decades in the same job.
Michael Hughes, 43 from Croxteth, had been travelling around the world since joining the Royal Navy aged 18. After serving on seven submarines and two ships, he then spent time onboard the UK’s nuclear deterrent submarines and as a Submarine Controller at the navy's headquarters in London.
Despite the high-pressure nature of his work, he loved his time serving. Speaking to the ECHO, he said: “I’m quite proud to be fair. The naval career in itself, lasting 25 years, it was easy to take that for granted. That naval advert, it’s cliché but without a doubt it’s true. I was born in Croxteth but made in the Royal Navy. It gave me work and the desire to do so much.”

Michael finished his time as a Commissioned Officer. However, he joined the reserves straight after leaving, admitting that he found it hard to adjust to a different life. He said: “You become institutionalised. It's a scary moment, leaving the navy after that amount of time. Everybody I know has gone through the same thing.”
After giving it some thought, Michael decided to open his own luxury chauffeur business. It might be a change of pace from his old line of work, but he felt he could make it work. He said: “It's the service side of it. The very basics of it is that I've always liked nice cars and always enjoyed driving. I do do that less now I run the business but I'll still drive sometimes. I still really enjoy it.
