The only good news for Chelsea and Mauricio Pochettino is that they have a full week to prepare for facing Everton. The bad news within that is the record of having time on the training ground hasn't coincided with an upturn in results.
Now,with Pochettino fighting for his job and fans only turning yet further, the importance of responding to a week of worrying performances — even if boosted by a big three points against Manchester United — cannot be overstated. Chelsea could start their Monday night clash against Everton back in 11th and cut adrift of the European places regardless of games in hand.
On the other hand they could end the gameweek well within view of their rivals for Europa League. Central to their end of season run will undoubtedly be Cole Palmer, and he is an injury doubt.
The forward had to be taken off with the result against Sheffield United in the balance after suffering some big blows from forceful tackles. He has also played a lot of football in recent weeks and is at risk of burning out.
Malo Gusto also missed the game following two weeks of battling fitness and illness. Pochettino will be keen to get them both back for the visit of Everton.
