Last week, Lyon were poised to sign Peruvian midfielder Renato Tapia (27) from Celta Vigo. Tapia would have been Les Gones’ third signing of the summer, after the arrival of promising defensive midfielder Skelly Alvero from Sochaux and right-back Clinton Mata from Club Brugge.
However, Tapia’s move to Lyon is currently frozen, despite a €5m agreement being found between Celta Vigo and Olympique Lyonnais. L’Équipe understand that Lyon have been unable to complete the move due to the measures implemented by the DNCG.
Last week, the Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion – French’s football financial watchdog – decided to monitor Lyon’s transfer activity and wage bill for the 2023-2024 season due to financial irregularities in the budget presented by Les Gones boss John Textor. The DNCG has deemed that the Eagle Football Holding chief has not provided sufficient financial guarantees in the budget he has presented. The authority may have prevented Lyon from signing Tapia for the time being
During this uncertain period, Tapia has returned to pre-season training with his Celta Vigo teammates. In any case, the Peruvian international is considering seeing off the remainder of his contract with La Liga side. L’Équipe understand Tapia only needs to remain several more weeks in Spain to acquire, for him and his family, a Spanish citizenship. The French publication believe Lyon have not given up hope of signing him.
