Sean Dyche makes Beto admission and explains why he was brought off in Everton defeat

Sean Dyche said his coaching team played no role in Beto’s redemption after the striker recovered from two big misses to eventually give Everton the lead against West Ham United.

The forward was given a rare opportunity to start on Saturday, his first in the league since early December. The move came with Dominic Calvert-Lewin having not scored a goal in 20 matches.

Beto himself had gone 15 appearances without a goal and entered the dressing room at half-time having missed both a one on one and a penalty, visiting goalkeeper Alphonse Areola saving both efforts.

If the striker’s confidence had taken a knock it did not show as he fought to make an impact in the second half and was rewarded with a goal that sent his team into the lead.

Discussing his performance after the match, which West Ham came from behind to win 3-1, Dyche said: “Missing a penalty is not easy, he missed a good chance in the first half but he kept going and it is great header. He fatigued so we had to take him off but it is another good marker from him to say, 'look, I am ready and I want to take it on'.”

Asked whether he needed to pick up the summer signing at the break after his first-half disappointment, Dyche said: “Absolutely not. He knows the responsibility, he got on with it and scored a very good goal.”
