For Manchester United's new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, it was a stark reminder of the pitfalls which can be associated with a move to a new stadium.

Many United fans agree that Old Trafford needs desperate renovation work however few feel that a move to a new ground, just a stone's throw from the Theatre of Dreams, is the solution to the problem. Despite many clubs' best efforts, switching to a new home can throw up difficulties in creating atmospheres.

Tottenham Hotspur's replacement for White Hart Lane is arguably the most visually impressive ground in European football but rarely has the atmosphere lived up to its grandeur. And this is what Ratcliffe must be wary to address when looking to replace Old Trafford.

United's current home is by no means perfect. Sometimes the atmosphere has rightly been criticised but against Liverpool in the FA Cup, it showcased why supporters love it and what the 'New Old Trafford' would need to live up to.

The Theatre of Dreams is unique in that the fans remain close to the pitch with the intimidating Stretford End rising above the goal at one side, giving the impression that fans are on top of you. The history which is attached to the ground helps many to overlook the shoddy facade and leaky roofs - and rightly so.
