Spain extend contract of Luis de la Fuente for 2026 World Cup
Spain have triggered a clause in Luis de la Fuente‘s contract that will see him lead the side into the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the USA, provided they don’t decide to sack him prior.
De la Fuente took over after Luis Enrique in January of 2023, having risen through the ranks at the underage youth teams at the RFEF. Initially doubts were cast after a humbling defeat to Scotland, but victory in the Nations League over Croatia and Italy secured his job, and six straight wins to finish the qualification campaign restored confidence.
Relevo report that the RFEF have activated a clause to extend his deal until 2026, adding two years extra onto to a deal that would have seen him stay for the Euros this summer in Germany.
This should at least bring a degree of calm and ease any speculation that may have entered the tournament with La Roja, as he will not have to answer questions over his future until the tournament finishes.
