The next chapter in the Premier League's battle against clubs breaching financial rules is set to come to a head once more. After a second set of charges were dished out this season following separate cases for both Everton and Manchester City 12 months ago, a date has been prepared for the verdict of an appeal to be given.
According to Nottinghamshire Live, Everton will learn the outcome of their original punishment later on this week. The Toffees were docked 10 points by the league after going over the £105million threshold of allowed losses in a rolling three-year period as defined by the now much-maligned profitability and sustainability rules (PSRs).
That case related to a period ending in 2021/22, but they have now been charged with yet more breaches of the period ending in 2022/23 along with Nottingham Forest. The Reds are yet to be sanctioned by the league but an outcome is expected to be reached by the end of the season to avoid the messy situation that left Sean Dyche's team being impacted this year for misdeeds relating to a previous season.
City, on the other hand, have a much longer-term battle to fight. Their financial allegations are entirely different and relate to systematic cheating and lying over a 10-year period from 2008 onwards.
Possible punishments at this stage are unknownbut could realistically be anything from large fines, more points deductions (retrospective and current), relegation, or having titles stripped. Given how Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham have competed alongside Pep Guardiola's side (and their other managers prior) in that time, there is an eagerness to see how the case is dealt with.
