Marc Canham has stuck to the party line on the FAI’s managerial search despite their No 1 target Lee Carsley ruling himself out of the vacancy.
It’s understood despite repeated efforts to tempt the ex-Ireland midfielder from his position in charge of Euro U21 champions England, he’s decided to stay put.
Chris Coleman and Neil Lennon were overlooked by the FAI and the elongated hunt is now entering its 90th day with a squad due to be announced in a fortnight for two friendlies against Belgium and Switzerland in Dublin.
Canham, as the FAI’s director of football, has been to the forefront in headhunting Stephen Kenny’s successor since November and was asked about the saga while he was unveiling his Football Pathways Plan (FPP) on Tuesday.
Defending an episode Damien Duff has branded as ‘embarrassing’, Canham was adamant the protocols mirror that of their search for Vera Pauw’s replacement.
The FAI handed those reins to caretaker boss and Director of women and girls’ football Eileen Gleeson, a position she’s vacated but is believed to have a route back there as a fallback.
"The process is ongoing and we hope to complete that as soon as possible," Canham said today.
“It's a confidential process. We've run a very tight process, respecting all the people we spoke to and speak to, we respect their confidentiality, we know it's an important role for Irish football. We are doing things in the right way and hope to complete that process.
"With the men's head coach the consistent message is that the process is ongoing, we hope to complete that process and we are getting closer.
