Carlo Ancelotti has responded to claims that former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso could replace him as Real Madrid boss.
The Reds icon, who played a pivotal role in guiding Rafael Benitez’s side to Champions League glory, has made an impressive start to his managerial career. Alonso was appointed Bayer Leverkusen boss in October 2022 and steered the club from a relegation battle to sixth in the Bundesliga, plus reaching the Europa League semi-finals.
Leverkusen have started the new season in a similar vein and are currently level with Bayern Munich at the top of the table. This has led to speculation that Alonso could soon be snapped up by one of his former clubs
It was claimed by Radio Marca on Monday that Alonso is set to replace Ancelotti as Real Madrid boss next season, with journalist Matias Prat explaining that this was "not a feeling" but based on information. After suffering a defeat to local rivals Atletico at the weekend, veteran coach Ancelotti admitted he would love to see Alonso return to the Bernabeu, as well as another ex-Red, Alvaro Arbeloa, who is currently managing Real Madrid Under-19s side.

"I had Xabi Alonso as a player. He has a high-level knowledge of football,” Ancelotti said. “He's doing very well with Bayer Leverkusen. He has that reading [of the game], that capacity.
"I think one day -- for Raul [Gonzalez], for [Alvaro] Arbeloa, for Xabi Alonso -- their biggest wish is to coach Real Madrid and I want that for them because I know them all, I love them all. Let's hope that one day they can be Real Madrid coaches."
