Former Tottenham star Harry Kane avoids nightmare Champions League scenario with Bayern Munich

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane avoided the nightmare Champions League scenario as he inspired Bayern Munich to a 3-1 aggregate victory over Lazio on Tuesday night.

The pressure was firmly on the Bavarian club pre-match as they entered the game needing to overturn a one-goal deficit from the first leg. However, from the first whistle, Bayern were on the front foot with the visitors struggling to cope with the German club.

It took until the 38th minute for Bayern to level the scores in the tie as Kane bagged his first of the evening, flicking home a header into the bottom corner. The half would end on a high for Munich as Thomas Muller somehow managed to direct a volley from Matthijs de Ligt into the back of the net.

Lazio attempted to regain control of the encounter in the second half but struggled to stem the onslaught from Bayern who put the game beyond doubt with less than half an hour remaining. Kane bagged his second of the game as he turned home an easy finish after an initial shot was saved.

Bayern joined PSG in the last eight of the Champions League after the Parisians beat Real Sociedad 2-1 on the night and 4-1 on aggregate. Captain Kylian Mbappe scored twice for the visitors.

As for Kane, his chances of first major silverware continue following a season of ups and downs so far. In the Bundesliga, the reigning champions are ten points behind Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen.

England captain Kane left Spurs for Bayern last summer in a £100million deal. He has scored 33 goals in all competitions so far this season.
