Well, sort of. Mauricio Pochettino may not have accepted his side were operating too differently in his press conference, but to most bystanders, Chelsea's set up certainly looked different to what featured over pre-season, as the Blues set up with three central defenders in Axel Disasi, Levi Colwill and Thiago Silva, with Nicolas Jackson and Raheem Sterling the immediately visible forwards.
"If you see the second phase when we didn't have the ball, it was Levi and Reece, back four with centre-backs Disasi and Thiago. If you have a drone and take a picture, depending on the time, maybe sometimes it is 14321, 135, I don't know the numbers. I think it is two different phases that we tried today. In possession to play with three building from the back to midfielder then Reece and Chilly and using Raheem and Carney and Jackson. What is key, is that Pochettino's side is going to have plenty of flexibility while operating under the same principles for each game. The head-coach was able to trust Ben Chilwell with providing width down the left flank as one of the side's most advanced attackers and also with a role in the centre of the pitch in a bid to stifle Trent Alexander-Arnold and provide more cover.
Seeing how the layers of Chelsea's adaptability develops over the course of the season is set to be fascinating.
