UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has given his full support to the Football Governance Bill, which would establish an independent regulator for football and thus impact Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham.
It comes during a week when Premier League clubs have not agreed on a new money deal with the EFL. Premier League clubs were expected to offer more money to the domestic pyramid, about £900million over six years, but such an offer was never agreed in a meeting on Monday. Instead, they want to focus on new ways to control costs.
Meanwhile, the details of government bill for an independent regulator might even be made public this month. Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer has previously said that if the Premier League and the EFL can't agree on a deal, the new regulator could make them do it.
A spokesperson from the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) said: «The Government is on the side of football fans, and we continue to engage with leagues and clubs ahead of the introduction of the Football Governance Bill.
»We have a clear plan to deliver a sustainable future for football, with fans at its heart, and our forthcoming legislation will deliver this through a tough new independent regulator."
Dame Caroline Dinenage, the chair of the Culture, Media and Sport select committee, earlier accused the Premier League of making an «empty promise» to the EFL over funding. The delay has already faced criticism from former Manchester United captain Gary Neville, and now Dinenage has spoken out.
