L’Équipe are reporting that Crystal Palace’s Jake O’Brien (22) is set to undergo a medical ahead of a move to Olympique Lyonnais.
O’Brien is a player that Lyon owner John Textor knows well, given his involvement with Crystal Palace. The Ireland U21 spent last season on loan at Molenbeek, another club within the Eagle Football family. O’Brien is set to sign for a €1m fee after a deal for Saba Sazonov, which was reportedly worth around €3m, was deemed too financially onerous.
O’Brien will act as a numerical replacement for Castello Lukeba, who is set to join RB Leipzig in a big-money move. Despite the fee being touted – around €35m – Lyon have little wriggle room in this window and are being monitored by the DNCG, French football’s financial watchdog.
O’Brien will undergo his medical on Friday before signing a four-year deal with Les Gones. Whilst he will train with Laurent Blanc’s side over the course of the next few weeks, there is a chance that he will be once again loaned out to Belgium before the end of the window.
