Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg believes a basic breakdown in communication was the reason behind Luis Diaz's goal being wrongly ruled out in Liverpool's controversial 2-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.
Liverpool were furious on Saturday when Diaz's strike, with the game still goalless, was ruled out for offside. The PGMOL admitted after the game that the goal should have stood.
It emerged after the game that VAR incorrectly thought the on-field decision was that a goal had been awarded, when in fact it had not been. This resulted in England, despite realising that Diaz was onside, relaying a message of 'check complete' and the goal being ruled out.
The ECHO understands PGMOL chief Howard Webb reached out to Liverpool to offer an apology for the disallowed goal after the final whistle, with a review now taking place over the incident. The Reds also took the unprecedented step of releasing a statement about a decision in a match and accused the PGMOL of undermining sporting integrity on Sunday night.

And now writing in the Daily Mail, Clattenburg offered his take on the incident, saying: “The PGMOL brought in Phil Bentham last year to improve communications between the match officials because of his background in rugby league. As a former TMO his every word was broadcast live, and Howard Webb has been striving for his Premier League officials to make their messages clear and concise.
