According to L’Équipe , Olympique de Marseille’s hierarchy had assured Gennaro Gattuso that the trip to Stade Brestois would not be decisive for his future, but after the miserable performance on Sunday evening, they have decided to part ways with the manager.
Earlier reports had suggested that the manager was going to choose to leave the club, but now it appears as if Marseille have taken the decision. Gattuso had only been appointed midway through the season after Marcelino left the club due to threats from supporter groups .
At the time, Marseille had been interested in Christophe Galtier for the position but were dissuaded from an approach due to his ongoing racism trial . The manager has subsequently been cleared of the charges , and Marseille could attempt to coax his current club Al-Duhail to an early separation.
However, if Galtier cannot arrive before the start of the next season, then Marseille plan on bringing in Jean-Louis Gasset on an interim basis. Gasset had led the Côte d’Ivoire at the start of this year’s Africa Cup of Nations but after a dreadful group stage where they snuck into the Round of 16 as a third-placed qualifier.
The manager resigned following the group stages, and the Côte d’Ivoire spectacularly went on to win the competition without Gasset at the helm.
