Mac Allister the magnificent
If the sight of Liverpool notching a late, late winner has become increasingly regular this season, there was something unusual about the Reds racing towards the visiting fans to celebrate.
Among them were Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo and Dominik Szoboszlai, the three initial summer arrivals as part of Jurgen Klopp’s midfield overhaul.
Remarkably, it was only the fifth time the trio were on the pitch together this season, an indication of the injuries that have hampered Liverpool and the occasional individual dips in form suffered by all three.

The return of Szoboszlai from the bench after a month out is timely given the growing importance of forthcoming fixtures and continued absences of Curtis Jones and Ryan Gravenberch, while Endo’s cameo confirmed his Wembley injury was only minor.
And, once again, Liverpool benefited from Mac Allister playing in a more advanced position, the Argentina international revelling after being freed from his largely defensive shackles.
Even during a fitful first half, Mac Allister was able to create chances for Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz. And his composure and execution to dig out the cross for Nunez was a further example of his effectiveness further up the pitch that has now contributed three assists and a goal in his last four starts. This is the Mac Allister that Liverpool have been waiting for.
