L’Équipe report this afternoon that Marseille have seen their 12-month transfer ban lifted after a successful appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport after FIFA’s initial ruling.
Les Phocéens had initially been sanctioned by the sport’s governing body in the wake of their dispute with Championship side Watford regarding the transfer of Pape Gueye.
The Senegalese midfielder had reportedly signed a pre-contract agreement with Watford three years ago, when he was still at Le Havre. When he eventually signed for the Ligue 1 outfit instead, the English club filed a complaint to FIFA, which saw OM hit with a transfer ban and the player suspended for four months.
L’Équipe indicate that the player himself has been fined €2.5m after terminating his contract with Watford. Gueye has gone on to make a century of appearances for Marseille, scoring four goals in that time, having also spent time on loan at Sevilla this past campaign.
