Micky van de Ven was named in the starting XI to face Manchester United by Ange Postecoglou after two months out of action with a hamstring injury. For the FA Cup third-round win against Burnley, van de Ven returned to the matchday squad but he remained on the bench despite a late injury to Ben Davies.
In the absence of van de Ven, Davies has been imperious for Tottenham and Postecoglou and therefore his hamstring injury is a cruel blow right as the Lilywhites welcome back van de Ven. On Friday, Postecoglou said: «From the last game, Ben Davies came off with a hamstring issue. Probably looking for a month or so for him out.»
Cristian Romero had also been dealing with a hamstring injury however he surprisingly returned to the starting XI for the clash at Old Trafford. As a result, January signing Radu Dragusin was named on the bench with his debut coming late into the game as Spurs attempted to defend the potential point given to them by Rodrigo Bentancur following first half goals from Rasmus Hojlund, Richarlison and Marcus Rashford.
However, just before the 90, van de Ven went down to the ground holding his calf with what looked to be cramp. Given he had not featured for Spurs in over two months it was understandable, however he was withdrawn just a few moments after that stoppage with Emerson Royal on in his place.
As he hobbled off the pitch, another injury suffered was the worst-case scenario, however he was later captured clapping the supporters without any clear sign of a new issue. After the game, van de Ven and Timo Werner were interviewed with the defender commenting on the real reason for his substitution.
