Paul Tierney given VAR role for Liverpool clash after Bournemouth saga
Jurgen Klopp’s long history with Paul Tierney will continue with the official put on VAR duty for Liverpool’s next match.
The Reds take on Wolves live on talkSPORT on Saturday at 12:30pm and Michael Oliver will be the match referee.
Tierney will take on video assistant duties, despite a controversial call in his last game involving Liverpool.
The 42-year-old filled the same role for a 3-1 win over Bournemouth on August 19, and played his part in a straight red card for Alexis Mac Allister on his Anfield debut.
The Argentine was given his marching orders in the 58th minute for a 50/50 challenge with Ryan Christie.
In the VAR room, Tierney didn’t argue with Thomas Bramall’s on-pitch call, but the Football Association did, agreeing with a Liverpool appeal and overturning the suspension.
The score was 2-1 at the time, and despite things being in the balance, Liverpool would go on to score again with ten-men and close out the game.
That was just the latest incident in a long-running saga between Klopp and Tierney, which seemingly dates back to 2020 when the official was heard saying: “I missed it. Get over it,” in regards to a foul on Giorgino Wijnaldum.
Things dramatically boiled over in 2021 against Tottenham when Klopp was filmed approaching Tierney after a 2-2 draw before telling him: “I have no problems with referees, only you.”
It was against Spurs again in May 2023 when Klopp accused Tierney of having an agenda against Liverpool after a 4-3 win, comments which earned him a touchline ban.
At least this time if any controversy does unfold on the pitch, the two will be kept apart by the walls of the VAR room…
