Arsenal goalkeeperAaron Ramsdale made up for his mistake against Brentford by stopping the ‘goal of the season’ from Ivan Toney, according to Match of the Day pundit Ashley Williams.
Ramsdale came back into the starting lineup in Saturday evening’s clash at the Emirates Stadium withDavid Raya unable to face his parent club. The game was Ramsdale’s first Premier League start since the reverse fixture back in November where he kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 win.
The goalkeeper’s hopes of keeping another clean sheet this time were dashed just before half time when he was closed down by Yoane Wissa. Ramsdale was unable to get his feet sorted quickly enough with his clearance bouncing off the attacker and into the net for Brentford’s equaliser.
“He’s come in for Raya and I’m pretty sure he just wanted a quiet day in the game today and it’s exactly what didn’t happen,” Williams told Match of the Day. “Just before half time, the ball goes back to Gabriel, as he plays it back you can see Wissa he’s putting the pressure on him straight away, he takes way too long and he gets caught with it.
“He does this thing that when he takes his first touch his steps aren’t right so he stutters and he takes so long and Wissa knows that, puts the pressure on him, slides and then it goes in and then you’re feeling for him because you know that all eyes are on him.”
Arsenal did come away with the three points thanks to Kai Havertz 86th minute header. But they had Ramsdale to thank for keeping the score level prior to that after he saved an audacious effort from Toney.
