Rennes host Marseille on Sunday night at Roazhon Park for the showpiece game of theCoupe de France’s Round of 32. Coincidentally, Les Rouge et Noir et Les Phocéens already met at this stage of the tournament last season. Then, Igor Tudor’s side beat Bruno Genesio’s squad 1-0 at the Velodrome courtesy of a second-half goal from Mattéo Guendouzi.
A year on, Guendouzi left for Lazio whilst Tudor as well as Genesio are currently free agents. Genesio’s successor in Brittany, Julien Stéphan, inherited a youthful and unbalanced squad from which marquee signing Nemanja Matic does not wish to be a part anymore. The Serbian is pushing for an exit and did not train with his teammates for weeks now. Therefore, he won’t feature against Les Phocéens.
However, Stéphan has managed to strike the right balance with the tools at his disposal, as demonstrated by Rennes’ convincing win against INEOS’ Nice last Saturday. Back-up goalkeeper Gauthier Gallon will stand between the sticks. Belgian international centre-back Arthur Theate will miss out through suspension.
After an injury scare against Les Aiglons, Enzo Le Fée is expected to feature alongside the energetic Baptiste Santamaria in a double midfield pivot. France U21 international striker Arnaud Kalimuendo, who scored a brace in the previous round at Guingamp, will start up front alongside Martin Terrier.
Rennes likely line up against Marseille
Gauthier Gallon; Guéla Doué, Warmed Omari, Jeanuël Belocian, Adrien Truffert; Benjamin Bourigeaud, Enzo Le Fée, Baptiste Santamaria, Désiré Doué; Arnaud Kalimuendo, Martin Terrier. (L’Eq)
