January cannot come soon enough for Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. Heading into Thursday evening's game against Brighton & Hove Albion on the back of three successive wins in the Premier League, all that positivity unfortunately evaporated inside 75 minutes at the Amex Stadium.
Starting slowly and very lucky to still be on level terms inside the opening few minutes following Guglielmo Vicario's heroics to twice deny Danny Welbeck, the Italian's goal was to be breached on 11 minutes courtesy of Jack Hinshelwood's strike after Joao Pedro was allowed to drive across the Spurs box far too easily.
The Brazilian was to become a pivotal figure in the game, notably netting two penalties either side of Pervis Estupinan's incredible strike from distance. Tottenham did have a couple of opportunities on goal during those 75 minutes, with the linesman's offside flag frustrating Richarlison on two occasions when he managed to put the ball beyond Jason Steele.
Mounting a late comeback courtesy of Alejo Veliz and Ben Davies' goals, the two strikes proved too little, too late as the Seagulls held on for all three points. For Tottenham, it was very much a missed opportunity as a fourth win on the trot would have lifted them back into the top four and three points off the summit of the league table.
Postecoglou's Tottenham team are very much patched up at the moment following some horrendous luck on the injury front. Losing Cristian Romero to a hamstring strain for possibly five weeks, Spurs were perhaps lucky that Dejan Kulusevski didn't join his teammate in the treatment room as he was on the end of a bad tackle from Lewis Dunk that left Postecoglou extremely unhappy.
