Tottenham leapfrog Chelsea as Liverpool, Manchester United, and Man City all drop in money league

Three major English clubs slipped down the latest Deloitte Football Money League as teams in Europe all gained ground.

Liverpool dropped from third down to seventh, the biggest fall of any club in the top 20, after suffering a slight fall in revenue from £594.3million to £593.8m.

This has been attributed to Jurgen Klopp’s side struggling on the pitch last season as they finished fifth in the Premier League and exited the Champions League in the last-16, according to Deloitte.

Manchester United were fourth in last year’s list, but fell to fifth place despite seeing growth in their revenue.

Man City were leapfrogged by Real Madrid and dropped to second, even though they posted record Premier League revenue.

Tottenham are the highest London club as they swapped places with Chelsea to move up one place to eighth.

The Blues were in ninth place, while Arsenal held on to 10th spot.

Madrid posted revenue of £723m in 2022/23 season to claim top spot, while Paris Saint-Germain were into the top three for the first time. Barcelona were up three places to seventh with revenue of £696m.

The Money League looks at revenue figures reported in clubs' annual accounts for the 2022-23 season and does not look at operating costs.

Tim Bridge, the lead partner in Deloitte's Sports Business Group, told the PA news agency: «There is a point in time, a moment here, where you've got Real Madrid and Barcelona redeveloping their stadiums, they have made moves towards controlling much more of their operations, particularly merchandising and licensing, so those revenue figures are a result of direct changes they have made to their business model.
