Throughout the winter transfer window, there was speculation that Karim Benzema might return to Europe. Nothing could be further from the truth. The striker has come out against those rumours in 'GQ' and, surprisingly, has declared that he is at ease in Saudi Arabia.
"This is an exceptional place, I am at peace here. It's a new challenge that I like, a long-term project in a Muslim country and, as a Muslim, when I'm in Mecca I find peace," he said. These statements come after he refused to train in one of his team's last sessions, which led to renewed talk of his discomfort at this new tournament.
He explained that he is now more than just a footballer: "I'm not just a player here, I'm also an ambassador. I am here to bring great European players in the near future, although there are already some top players in the Saudi league. Our challenge is to raise it to the same level as the European competitions.
Benzema has not set himself a goal figure to reach. "For many, having the No.9 on your back means scoring 50 a season. For me, it means being one of the 11 chosen ones. I have to do my best to help the team score and win," he said.
As for the future, Benzema ruled out retirement in the short term. "Time will tell, but I'm the one who will choose when my career ends," he said.
"I'd like to be remembered as someone who started from 0 and managed to get to the top on his own, despite the obstacles I faced. That's something I'm really proud of," he said in closing.
