When Todd Boehly arrived at Chelsea in May 2022, there were huge expectations on his shoulders. After all, Roman Abramovich had transformed the Blues into one of England's and Europe's heavyweights during his reign at the west London club.
Boehly knew the pressure was on and he had to make the club his own. A £1billion transfer spend in three windows has only heightened that pressure and also served to show he means business.
Performances on the pitch have not matched that outlay, but when it comes to making signings it has been a case of Boehly seeing what he wanted and doing everything in his power to make it happen. Except perhaps, for one player.
Boehly wanted to make a statement signing in his first transfer window and with Cristiano Ronaldo's future at Manchester United in the spotlight there were plenty of talks around the Portuguese superstar arriving in west London.
Boehly had a meeting with super agent Jorge Mendes to discuss a possible deal, but it never came to fruition. That was mainly down to then manager Thomas Tuchel vetoing the move.
Chelsea made plenty of other signings and have continued to do so, up until this January transfer window at least. But the Blues have tended to go for young players with potential on long-term contracts. That includes big-money signings Mykhailo Mudryk, Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo.
