Richard Keys has reiterated his theory about Premier League referee Michael Oliver following the controversy in Liverpool's draw against Manchester City, which left Arsenal top of the league.
The former Sky Sports presenter believes that Oliver is «above reproach» and that VAR is pointless in games he officiates. During Sunday's draw between the title rivals at Anfield, Oliver did not award Liverpool a last-minute penalty when Jeremy Doku's raised leg hit Alexis Mac Allister's ribs.
In the aftermath, Keys has reinforced his previous criticism of the top Premier League referee, suggesting that other officials are intimidated by him. On X, Keys wrote: «Until someone in VAR finds the courage to tell Oliver that he's made a mistake what we saw happen at Anfield yesterday — and most weeks elsewhere — will keep happening. I've said it all this season and last. He thinks he's above reproach. VAR is a waste of time when he's on the pitch.»
«What did Jurgen Klopp have for lunch if he thought Stewart Attwell was going to tell Michael Oliver he'd made a mistake? There was no chance of that happening. Zero. None. Not Sunday. Not ever. And I've been telling you all this for months now.
»Of course Liverpool should've had a late pen — but once Oliver had decided otherwise, Attwell was in a really invidious position. There was no way he was going to ask Oliver to go to the monitor."
Last month, Keys suggested that VAR David Coote didn't want to challenge Oliver during Liverpool's match at Brentford, reports the Mirror. He thought Brentford deserved a penalty when Robertson tackled Toney.
