Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group have the tough decision of deciding who will replace Jurgen Klopp. The Reds manager has announced he will leave the club at the end of the season and it remains to be seen who will replace him.
How do you replace a manager who has won six trophies in eight and a half years after all? Former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso is the early favourite, with his Bayer Leverkusen side sitting top of the Bundesliga at present.
Current Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders, Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi and former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann have also been tipped to replace Klopp. Another is Steven Gerrard.
The Reds legend is the current manager of Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq and is most probably one of the names being considered by owner John Henry and CEO Billy Hogan. Gerrard did sign a two-year contract extension at Al Ettifaq earlier this month, but the pull of returning to Merseyside will likely be too strong for the 43-year-old if the Reds do come knocking.
Klopp has even backed the idea himself. Speaking in 2021, the German said when asked whether Gerrard could one day manage Liverpool: «Oh yes I do, absolutely. The only thing is when is the right moment for that.
»I think that Stevie is doing really well and he's very young from a manager's point of view so it's just when is the right moment for him to take the job. Yes, I believe it will definitely happen and be good for everyone."
