John Stones back in Man City training ahead of Tottenham game

John Stones has returned to Manchester City training following the injury he picked up at the end of December.

Stones had to be taken off during the 3-1 win over his former club Everton after landing awkwardly from a challenge in an action that was then belatedly flagged as offside. If the team were frustrated by the decision, it was also difficult to lose Stones again given the England international has only completed a full league game this season on two occasions.

City came from behind to beat Everton and have won six in a row in all competitions, but Pep Guardiola will be thrilled that Stones was able to join his teammates for part of a full session at the weekend for the first time since his latest injury. The team are out in Abu Dhabi for a week during the Premier League winter break before they return to face Tottenham in the FA Cup next Friday and allowed local supporters to watch them train.

The Blues are still waiting on Erling Haaland and Manu Akanji, given previous hopes that they could be ready in time for the end of the month. Haaland has not played since the end of November due to a foot issue that included a recent setback forcing him to sit out training, while Akanji was hurt in the FA Cup win over Huddersfield.

Ederson also had to be substituted in the win over Newcastle last week following a similar incident to the one that saw Stones ruled out. While the goalkeeper's situation did not turn out to be as serious as Stones', his teammate Rodri still called for a change in the way the game is officiated.
