Michael Edwards has returned to Liverpool Football Club and will head the post-Jurgen Klopp era in a senior role with club owners, Fenway Sports Group.
Klopp will step down after nine successful years at Anfield at the end of the season, with Jorg Schmadtke's departure at the end of the winter transfer window, an important period is on the horizon for Liverpool. Richard Hughes, it is believed, will arrive as the new sporting director following the end of his tenure with AFC Bournemouth.
Edwards enjoyed a highly successful period as a supremo at Anfield but will now move into a higher role within the FSG structure, thus allowing the possibility of welcoming the former Portsmouth midfielder.

The 44-year-old became synonymous with the Reds for his shrewd business in the transfer market and he was lauded for his role in helping Liverpool re-establish themselves on the global stage. His prowess at the negotiation table saw the club pocket a hefty price tag for Phillippe Coutinho, which contributed to the purchases of Virgil van Dijk and goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
Last summer saw a period of transition under the German after there were wholesale changes in the midfield. Jordan Henderson and Fabinho made their surprise moves to Saudi Arabia, while James Milner departed for Brighton & Hove Albion upon the expiry of his contract.
An even greater challenge is in the offing with Edwards, and possibly Hughes, tasked with implementing the succession plan for one of the club's most successful managers.
